Today’s Comic

Saturday, February 3rd, 2007

One more Ginger strip tomorrow. I’d love to make her a recurring character, but that would mean she’d have to get lost a  lot.

Stunningly Funny Comic

Saturday, February 3rd, 2007

I stumbled across a new single panel comic today that is now my new favorite. I love strange humor. In fact many of my early comics where just plain, outright odd. Thankfully characters like Doug and Sophie balance out the surreal, drippy side of my brain. But this new strip is like a refreshing rhombus dipped in yogurt. It’s called “Frog Applesauce” and it’s brilliant.

You can check it out on gocomics.com, but be warned, if you don’t like strange humor it might not be for you. But for me, well, I’m still sore from laughing at today’s strip:

Cartooning toolsPens and Pencils

The picture shows everything I use to draw the strip. I create the panels in illustrator then print it out onto bristol board (smooth). Sunday’s are about 14in. wide and dailies are 12in. This is mainly so they fit on my scanner. Although I plan on eventually getting a big, big scanner so I can draw the strips even larger.

I use Faber-Castell pencils. I have a whole set, but for the strip I do roughs with a 5H and then usually grab a H or HB for finishing pencils. When I started the strip I only did one round of pencils before inking. But now I do two rounds. It gives the strip that smoother, refined look that apparently is becoming my style.

The pens are from Copic. They’re aluminum and refillable which is a huge plus. I’ve tried every pen imaginable (still do).  But the pen really does dictate the style. I’ve found these pens work best for the strip. I used to use Micron Pigma pens, but the nibs didn’t last long and the ink faded. If you like the Micron’s you will LOVE these copics.

A couple other tools not pictured are my gum erasers, pen erasers and a couple sharpies for coloring in large black spaces. Oh, and the occasional reference photos.

Artist Spotlight

Monday, February 12th, 2007

I haven’t posted a link to any illustrators in awhile. I’ve been busy, busy with the strip and the books. But I’ve been thinking that eventually I might write some books that I won’t illustrate, which would be really cool. Not that I don’t love illustrating, but I find so much inspiration and energy from admiring the works of other artists. To get the chance to work with an amazing painter would be awesome. Here’s one such artist:

Coraline Movie

Monday, February 19th, 2007

I’ve blogged several times before on Neil Gaiman’s work, so I thought I’d post a little something more about “Coraline”. First off, If you haven’t read the book, please bump it up a few notches on your Amazon wishlist.  Second, below is a link to a post on Neil’s site with an update on the movie:
