Detroit
December 6th, 2005
Well after some rough feedback in the Detroit News from MAry Worth readers, the editors decided to pick up DeD! Thanks to everyone that sent in feedback to the paper.
They had replaced Mary Worth with DeD in order to try it out. And although the comments on DeD were favorable, the Mary Worth fans were pretty outraged. Hopefully they’ll keep it now too.

Jeez. People still READ “Mary Worth”?! And all three of them took the time to complain?
I’d sure hate to get those “Alley Oop” folks riled up!

This is great! I really thought, after so much resistance, they would pass. Yaaa for the Detroit News for having such good sense! They won’t be sorry!

You’re not kidding about those Alley Oop fans. I kid you not. They had a poll in our local paper, and Alley Oop got the fewest votes so they took it out. So many people complained that they stuck it back in. Can you believe that? But they dumped Foxtrot!!

Wouldn’t it be simpler to just read the thing online? http://www.comics.com/comics/alleyoop/index.html

Cool beans! DeD can displace just about any strip in my local paper (something I’ve communicated to the editor)…including and especially Mary Worth

You gotta watch those Mary Worth fans. Once they turn on you, it’s all over. Next thing you know, it’s readers of The Lockhorns. Then Prince Valiant afficianados, and next thing you know, you’re swamped beneath thousands of stringently grammatical hate letters with perfect penmanship! Woe be unto thee, my friend. Woe.

Those Mary Worth fans better recognize, or I’ll bring the funk on them.

Knock, Knock, there’s a choir at your door……”We Wish You A Merry Christmas And A Happy New Year” Stopping by to wish you and yours Happy Holidays!!

They would sell more papers if they dumped all the news and just had comics and adverts.

Congratulations on kicking Mary’s butt out the door, Brian! I’d read your strip over most strips any day of the week, especially Mary Worth.

Way cool, congratulations! I hope it wasn’t very much of a battle, though. That would shake my faith in humanity.

What’s next? (gasp) Will they get rid of Marmaduke and the Family Circus?
We can’t even get our paper to carry The Boondocks! They carried it for about 4 days and that was that. No explanation. Just . . . gone.
And I DID email them about DeD and got no reply. It’s the perfect for Connecticut, seeing you can’t swing a cat and not hit someone who’s got a Lab. Or a kid. Or both.

Congratulations!

OMG, you killed Mary Worth!

I can’t believe Mary Worth is still around. Someone should have killed it off like 20 years ago.

Way to go n Detroit. Sad that it comes down to a one-on-one battle between two strips, though, which tends to make it personal when it really isn’t.

Congratulations! It’s too bad about pitting you against one comic instead of competing for a spot amongst all of them.

It’s fairly amazing how riled up people get over their comic strip lineup. Nearly ten years ago, my local paper had the temerity to pull “Marvin” and replace it with “Baby Blues”. I was working on the editorial desk at the time, and the reader-feedback email was TREMENDOUS. Even back then, when email was just catching on, I’d never seen such a response to any other single topic, from a broad range of readers. And that they were campaigning for such a lame-o strip (which has only gotten worse since) was the most amazing part. Not that “Baby Blues” is head and shoulders above, but still.
On the one hand, as a comics fan and publishing professional, I’m happy to see such devotion in both areas. On the other… I really wonder why people get so hooked on obviously crappy strips that are running on fumes.
So consider placement of DeD in each new paper an achievement. Editors are risking a lot of nasty flack over every subtraction they make to those hallowed funny pages.
